Is the Display of the Energy Certificate Mandatory?

Is the Display of the Energy Certificate Mandatory?

The answer is yes, but only in certain specific cases, namely:

  1. Existing commercial and service buildings with an internal usable floor area of 1000 m2 or more, or 500 m2 in the case of shopping centers, hypermarkets, supermarkets, and indoor swimming pools;
  2. Buildings owned and occupied by a public entity and frequently visited by the public with an internal usable floor area greater than 250 m2.

In summary, the owners of buildings in the cases described above must display the Energy Certificate prominently and visibly at their entrance.

This obligation arises from the Decree-Law No. 101-D/2020, of December 7, which defines the complementary model of the Energy Certificate that must be displayed.

Does this obligation apply to residential property owners, for example?

Owners of residential properties are exempt from visibly displaying the Energy Certificate.

To confirm whether certification is necessary, it is advisable to consult a specialized technician.
