When rehabilitating a property, it is mandatory to consider the legal requirements related to the thermal-energy aspect of Decree-Law No. 101–D/2020 and its respective orders and decrees. In parallel, whenever there are evident signs of structural degradation of the property, it is also mandatory to carry out structural reinforcement actions to minimize vulnerability and the risk of collapse in the event of an earthquake.
Due to our geographical location, which is highly exposed to seismic risk because of the proximity of the Eurasian tectonic plate to the African plate, Portugal has adopted measures to mitigate seismic risk, particularly after 1983, when the regulation on safety and actions for building and bridge structures (RSAEEP) came into force, enforcing strict requirements on materials and earthquake-resistant techniques.
Thus, during rehabilitation, it is always necessary to comply with all relevant regulations, both concerning thermal-energy standards and seismic risk, and always consider this information when rehabilitating your property.
