Multizone Dynamic Simulation

Multizone dynamic simulation, besides being mandatory for issuing energy certificates for buildings larger than 250m2, is also an excellent tool for analyzing energy consumption, usage profiles, and building improvement measures, allowing comprehensive and conclusive results.

For multizone dynamic simulation, it is necessary to use a program accredited by the ASHRAE 140-2004 standard, and it must at least be capable of modeling:

  • More than one thermal zone;
  • With an hourly increment over a one calendar year period, accounting for 8760 hours (24h 365 days);
  • The hourly variation of internal loads, differentiated into occupancy, lighting and equipment;
  • The thermostat setpoints of the thermal zones and the operation of the HVAC systems, allowing their parameterization independently for weekdays and weekends;
  • Heat recovery from the exhaust air;
  • The effect of the building’s thermal mass.

How is Multizone Dynamic Simulation Done?

The software used to simulate the installation is EnergyPlus, which uses DesignBuilder as a graphical interface, responsible for performing calculations and simulations.

The EnergyPlus program is developed by the U.S. Department of Energy, being one of the most widely used in the field, as it is continuously updated with reliable results. However, data entry in this program is somewhat complex and laborious, which is the main reason for the DesignBuilder graphical interface simplifying data input.

This software is accredited by the ASHRAE 140-2004 standard mentioned earlier.
For the building’s energy certification, four distinct simulation models are required:

  • Simulation of the actual model (based on monitoring vs billing and technical survey);
  • Simulation of the predicted model (based on the actual model, following certain rules and guidelines according to the decree);
  • Simulation of the reference model (based on regulated uses and unregulated energy consumption, following certain rules and guidelines according to the decree);
  • Simulation of improvement measures (based on the predicted model, considering the implementation of identified improvement measures).
